Nashville Road Trip – Part 2

Last week Landon and I road-tripped to Nashville.  It was about 700 miles from our house to the doorstep of our adorable Airbnb cottage.  Overall, we had a blast and would totally go back again!  Here’s part 2 of our time down south. (You can catch part 1 here.)

Day 2

Our second day we got going a little bit faster after having such a relaxing night in.  We headed to the Parthenon first. It is an exact size replica of the original Parthenon in Greece (minus being in ruins).  It was absolutely massive and pictures really don’t do justice.

Inside on the lower level was a museum of photos from it being built over 100 years ago and of various paintings (unrelated to the Parthenon as far as I could tell).  Upstairs there was a replica of the Athena Parthenos statue that stands 42 feet tall!  It was very impressive – as were the 8 ton bronze doors!

Those doors are ginormous!

After we took in all the gold of the Parthenon, we headed over to Belmont University for a little history lesson while touring Belmont Mansion.  It was an absolutely gorgeous day and was made even better by walking through a gorgeous campus.  It felt a little weird walking among all the students.  While Landon and I certainly don’t look out of place on a college campus, we did feel a bit weird knowing we averaged a decade older than the students with me being in my mid-to-late 20’s and Landon in his early 30’s.

The mansion was built by Adelicia Acklen in the mid-1800s.  It was just a little bigger than our house – at 19,000 square feet.  Okay, a lot bigger, like nearly 10 times.  ?  But, anyway, the tour was definitely one of our favorite parts of the trip.

We headed to Nashville’s Farmers Market for lunch.  It weekday so there wasn’t much for traditional farmers market booths but they have a building that is sort of a giant food court.  We had some good ol’ Chinese food to make sure our stomachs were prepared for some whiskey tasting!

Our next stop was Green Brier Distillery.  Two brothers resurrected their great-great-great grandfather’s distillery, which was the nation’s largest before prohibition.  The nearly 200 year old story of their family is fascinating and the tasting wasn’t bad either.  ?  Before we left, we purchased a barrel stave with a few project ideas in mind – stay tuned for that in the future!

So many barrels!

A few blocks down was the Corsair Brewstillery – yes that is brewery and distillery combined.  We took our time walking down, stopping into different shops to browse along the way.  We were a bit early for the tour so we plopped our tired selves on some stools in one of their little bars and tried some beer.  Landon enjoyed a citrus beer and I even had a half pint myself.  It was an apple cider beer but it almost looks like it could be white wine.  We then toured their facility and tasted five of their whiskeys.

Our second day kept us moving so we were pretty hungry by dinner time.  We headed to a local little place near our cottage called Batter’d and Fried.  The place calls itself a Boston Seafood House and it did not disappoint (although, we’ve never been to Boston to compare, minor details).  We then ventured back to our little place to relax and watch more of our new favorite show Time After Time.

I’ll share the final part of our trip tomorrow!  Here is part 1 if you missed it!

Last week Landon and I road-tripped to Nashville.  It was about 700 miles from our house to the doorstep of our adorable Airbnb cottage.  Overall, we had a blast and would totally go back again!  Here’s part 1 of our time down south.

Driving There

We spent a whole day driving down.  It really shouldn’t have taken that long but when you are 30minutes in and realize you forgot some crucial articles of clothing so you turn around, that eats up some time.  It also is wise to not constantly look things up on your phone and then try to take a picture of a water tower while the vehicle is moving if you are prone to carsickness.  You will get nauseous and then have to stop for another hour before you feel better.   The only hour worth the delay was when we stopped at this awesome restaurant in Kentucky for dinner.  We happened to be there when Kentucky was playing North Carolina for March Madness.  The place really got loud at the end!

Day 1

Our first morning we took our time waking up and getting ready.  I am my father’s daughter and feel a constant need to never take a breath on a vacation.  Landon was really good at telling me it’s okay to relax – which if you keep reading, you will see I got really good at doing just that.  A little after 9am we ventured out on our first Uber ride toward downtown to see the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum.

The place is massive!  There were so many different exhibits all over of all different sizes.  It was neat to see the old outfits from grandparents’ time but I honestly didn’t know much about the names with the clothes and instruments.  The wall of records was impressive.  And then we headed down to the next level and there were even more, so we stopped for a picture.

After the Country Music Hall of Fame, we walked a block over to Broadway, the street that is blocks of bar after bar after bar on both sides. In these bars is where amateur musicians play all hours of the day.  It was great to wander in and out of bars and listen to a variety of country music performed by full bands and individuals acoustically.  One bar (Nudie’s Honky Tonk) even boasted Nashville’s longest bar!  It was ridiculous and the whole bar was made of silver dollars.  We both enjoyed a fun cocktail – I swear it was 5 o’clock somewhere! ?

I couldn’t fit the whole bar in the picture it was so long.
Drinks
Landon had Nudie’s Tipsy Tea and I enjoyed a Rodeo Round Up. See all the silver dollars?

Later that night some pretty bad thunderstorms rolled in so we took to relaxing in our little cottage.  We found a new show called Time After Time and instantly became obsessed.  We actually watched all 6 episodes in our evenings.  You can go on vacation but apparently TV still has a hold on you…

Come back tomorrow for Part 2!

20 Ways to Spend your Tax Return

Finished 2016 taxes

Ahh tax season, ? the most wonderful time of the year?. Wait-what? Okay, so it’s no Christmas (or any other feel-good-holiday for that matter) BUT it is pretty great when the government gives you a nice check for being a law-abiding citizen who filed taxes. I know, you can argue that it was your money to begin with but it’s nice you get it back. There are so many ideas you can do with your tax return. Here are 10 of my favorite. I even got Landon to contribute 10 things he would use our tax return for. You’ll notice a trend with his…

My List

  1. Put it towards your mortgage.
  2. Invest in retirement.
  3. Save it for Christmas gifts.
  4. Go on vacation! (What we are doing right now ?)
  5. Update your landscaping. (Or actually landscape if you have a new house like us.)
  6. Go out for a fancy dinner with your significant other.
  7. Take a class in something you’ve always been interested in but haven’t pursued.
  8. Take a spa day – or many. ??
  9. Pay for a cleaning lady to come regularly for the rest of the year.
  10. Go crazy at the Container Store and organize your entire life.

Landon’s List

  1. New hunting gear – deer rifle, bow, etc.
  2. New golf clubs.
  3. Landscaping rock for our house.
  4. Go on a summer fishing trip to Canada.
  5. Trip to vegas with the guys.
  6. Take a golf trip to a famous course.
  7. Attend a major sporting event like the Masters or Final Four.
  8. Elk hunting trip out west.
  9. Finish my Man Cave with a nice bar and big TV.
  10. Get my wife something special. ??

There you go.  20 things to spend your tax return on from a girl’s and a guy’s perspective.  It looks like when we get done with this vacation we have some landscaping we need to get to…

Now go file your taxes if you haven’t already!  Only a couple weeks left!

Our Hickory Kitchen

I’m not sure how we landed on the idea to have hickory cabinets in our kitchen.  Perhaps it caught our eye during our many trips to Menards.  Or maybe Landon had the idea from a house he once visited.  I know for a fact it was not from Pinterest because I barely found ideas when I started searching for it.  Regardless, we went with hickory and every morning I fall a little more in love when I get my coffee.  ☕️ ❤️

We had a local Amish build our cabinets and they turned out absolutely amazing!  (Can you believe he built all this with no power tools?!)  It took awhile before we got the pantry door though.  That came from another Amish door maker.  Neither are the same Amish we got our mantle from.  (I believe I mentioned we have a lot of Amish by us.)  After getting the door installed, it took a few more months to figure out the trim.  Did you know hickory trim is not easy to find?  Landon ended up splitting some boards (from the cabinet maker) and I think the simple flat trim mimics the missionary cabinet style quite nicely.  We still are working on trim for the baseboard – all in due time!

As a wedding gift, my aunt gave us a gift certificate to Upper Case Living.  It’s been hard narrowing down what to put on all these blank walls but when I saw this one, I knew it would be the perfect addition to our kitchen.  What I love most is the established date.  We built our house and got married in 2015.  So not only was our kitchen physically established then, you could say the heart of our home was too, or you know our little family we make with the two of us.  ?

Kitchen a la yum

I think having it in black really pops against the hickory.   It was so easy to install too.  I didn’t have enough hands to take pictures but it’s mostly just rubbing the vinyl onto the wall and peeling back the paper that it came on.  Funny enough, the cutouts included everything but an established date.  I picked a font and size and ordered “2015” separately.  Matched the paint color from my walls pretty well, huh?  I was only a little nervous about that!

3 Ingredient Healthy Shamrock Shake

Ahh, March.  The month that comes in like a lion and out like a lamb.  Or at least that’s what I remember learning in second grade or so.  But it seems to be consistent with the year 2017 as well.  It’s been a rough couple weeks and I am glad we are approaching St. Patrick’s Day and the second half of the month!

Last weekend Landon and I headed up north for my cousin’s daughter’s baptism.  She asked me to be the godmother and I could not be more honored!  Our moms were sisters and we grew up with each other as the closest thing to real sisters.  I can’t wait to watch her little girl grow up!

Heightened Entertainment: DIY TV Hutch

TV hutch from left angle

What a week we have had!  Landon brought the flu home with him last Thursday.  We had planned to visit my parents over the weekend but that was quickly cancelled.  Then Saturday night, I came down with the nasty bug.  We are both feeling much better but the unexpected weekend home was anything but productive.  ?  Last night was the first time we were both feeling normal again.  Tonight we felt so good, we finally installed the hutch we made to give our TV a boost and create more organization with our streaming devices.  This project has been in mind for at least a year and is finally executed and complete!

Our TV stand is nothing special, just some good ol’ fashioned cube furniture from Ikea.  But I actually love the simple look and versatility of the squares.  They also can store a bajillion things and make great hiding places when you find out people are coming over in 5 minutes (not that I have personal experience with that last one…).  Anyway, it has bugged me for years (and 4 prior addresses) that my blue-ray player is just a teensy-bit too wide to fit into one of those cubes so it always had to sit on top, off to the side.  I like symmetry (seriously, I had to have an even number of bridesmaids so it was symmetrical on both sides of me) so this was a problem I saw every time we sat down to watch the idiot box.

before and after of entertainment unit
Before and after. Just looks a little more grand, don’t ya think?

What we did:

First, have husband cut a board leftover from the construction of house.  Second, wife searches Pinterest for the paint color that matches the infamous black-brown Ikea uses.  Third, husband constructs and paints stand.  Next, wife is completely repulsed by how the color that MULTIPLE pins said was right but is clearly so, so wrong.  Wife tells husband it needs to be more brown but also black.  Husband gives paint to his dad to add black paint to mix.  Husband repaints stand.  Wife is still disgusted.  Husband and wife go to local hardware store for the darkest brown they can fine.  Husband repaints stand.  Wife is pleased with brown color but it needs black to show through and give that grain look.  Husband borrows black paint from his dad.  Wife uses a bristle brush and just a tiny bit of black paint and creates wood grain affect.  Wife is pleased with outcome.  Husband is thankful he doesn’t have to paint the same darn thing every week anymore.

See, every story gets a happy ending? ?

What a pretty hutch ?

I love that all the electronics fit underneath in a symmetrical fashion.  I am also happy that it gives a little more height to the whole entertainment stand.  We already had added legs to the unit last year and now it just looks even better with our vaulted ceiling.  Like it belongs. ?
